Van Horn Takes Home Several Awards from Science and Engineering Fair

Hard work paid off for a number of Van Horn students at the 65th annual Greater Kansas City Science & Engineering Fair inside historic Union Station. Several Van Horn students heard their name called several times during the awards ceremony, especially students Ezekiel Pedrino and Chloe Trimble. “Phil Witt from Fox 4 emceed the event and joked about how many times Van Horn came up to receive awards, especially Chloe and Zeke,” said Debbie Cox, Van Horn teacher and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) advisor. “We (Van Horn students) took home a number of prestigious honors, many of which allow them to compete in national competitions.”

Pedrino’s project- a natural gas detector- and Trimble’s- using orange peels to produce bio-plastics- each garnered several awards (click here for complete list). Their projects and several others will be on display during Van Horn’s fourth annual Science & Engineering Fair in the school’s Little Theater in late April. Cox said the extra effort students put into their work made the difference.

“Most of them spent after school, Saturdays and Spring Break working on their projects,” she said, “and logged more than 40 hours in research alone!”

More than 100 private and parochial schools from across the metro participated in the fair.
