ISD Parade, ISD Kids Run & Open Houses Information

Mark your calendars to celebrate the Independence School District during the all-district parade on Saturday, October 20th at 9 a.m. Students, teachers and staff from each of our 29 schools will march around the Independence Square, celebrating our district and community. Elementary students in ISD running clubs who signed up in advance will participate in the ISD Kids Parade Run around the Independence Square at 7:45 a.m. prior to the parade.

Parade Route
The parade route will be slightly different this year due to the opening of the Independence Market. The parade route will start at Lexington Avenue and Osage Street, travel north on Osage Street, east on Maple Avenue, south on Main Street and then west on Kansas Street to end at Liberty Street.

Spectators will have a great view of the parade by lining up on both sides of Osage Street between Lexington Avenue and Maple Avenue, Maple Avenue between Osage Street and Main Street, Main Street between Maple Avenue and Kansas Street and Kansas Street between Main Street and Liberty Street.

Road Closures
The following streets will be closed before and during the all-district parade:

  • Maple Avenue between Osage Street and North Lynn Street
  • Lexington Avenue between Osage Street and North Lynn Street
  • Kansas Street between South Spring Street and South Lynn Street
  • Osage Street between Truman Road and West Walnut Street
  • Liberty Street between Truman Road and West Walnut Street
  • Main Street between Truman Road and West Walnut Street

Event Parking
Street parking will be available in the areas surrounding the parade route as well as several parking lots located east of the square.

ISD Kids Parade Run
Check-in for the run begins at 7:15 a.m. on October 20th. Students must have already pre-registered for the event with their school in order to participate. Parents must provide transportation to the event and escort students to check-in at South Osage Street and West Kansas Avenue. Students who have not checked in by 7:30 a.m. will not be able to participate in the run. The run will begin at 7:45 a.m. After the run, students will be held at the northeast corner of West Maple Avenue and North Liberty Street until they are matched by a wristband with their parent.

The ISD Kids Parade Run course will begin at Osage Street and Lexington Avenue. The course will travel east along Lexington, south at Liberty Street, east on Kansas Street, north on Main Street, west on Maple Avenue and south on Osage to Lexington Avenue. The course will be repeated a second time to total one mile, finishing in the parking lot on the northeast corner of Maple Avenue and Liberty Street (just west of the Pharaoh Theater).

High School Open Houses

Truman, Van Horn and William Chrisman High School will hold open houses from 10:30 a.m. to noon, welcoming alumni and community members to tour the new additions and see the bond progress!

At Truman High School, the bond included a lunchroom expansion, an athletic training and physical therapy classroom space for the Academies, a new main entry, remodeled science classrooms and a four-classroom addition on the south side of the building, moving four math classrooms out of the mobile trailers and into the school building.

The progress is also evident at Van Horn High School. The new addition on the east side of the building is nearing completion, housing five commercial kitchens for our Culinary Pathway, a metals classroom, a physical therapy, athletic training space and a competition gym. The bond also included remodeled science classrooms and a new woodshop.

At William Chrisman, the bond remodeled science classrooms, added a weight room along with a physical therapy and athletic training classroom spaces for the Academies. The bond also added a Cisco computer networking lab and additional classrooms for the Academies.
