Van Horn Biomedical Student Qualifies for Nationals, Earns Grand Award

Congratulations to Project Lead the Way Biomedical Innovation senior, Adriana Sarinana from Van Horn for receiving one of the 2024 Grand Awards at the Greater KC Science & Engineering Fair (GKCSEF) with her project titled, “A Hands-Free Approach to Adhesive Bandage Application for Enhanced Sterility and Convenience.” Adriana will present her project at the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles in May.

Adriana has also garnered several other distinctions, including 1st Place Overall Engineering Mechanics Division Award, The Society of American Military Engineers Award, The Office of Naval Research Award, and the Pioneers in Science Award.

Van Horn seniors Aaliyah A. and Adrianna Lara also won Conservation Cultivator Award from the KC Zoo and the Joseph C. Shipman Award. Each student will receive $500 for their project, “Integrated UVC Light and Wind Turbine Hand Dryer for Enhanced Hygiene and Sustainable Energy Generation.”

Additionally, senior Maria Diaz won the Association of Women Geoscientists Award for her project, “Assessing the Impact of Lead Toxicity on Drosophila melanogaster.”

Senior Valeria H. won 1st Place Overall Energy and Environmental Engineering Division Award, The Society of American Military Engineers Award, and the Yale Science & Engineering Award.
